Most Zanzibar excursions are sold with the same six photos, so it is genuinely hard to tell them apart before you arrive. Mnemba, Safari Blue and Nakupenda all involve a boat, clear water and a seafood lunch, and they are three completely different days.

Mnemba or Safari Blue?
This is the question we get most. They are not versions of each other.
- Choose Mnemba if the underwater part is the point. The reefs there are the best snorkelling on the island and the water is the clearest. It is a half day, from the north-east.
- Choose Safari Blue if you want the whole day out: sailing a dhow, a lagoon, a sandbank, snorkelling and a long lunch. It is more of an experience and less of a snorkelling trip, from the south-west.
If you have a week, do both. They are on opposite ends of the island and nothing about them repeats.
Nakupenda or Mnemba?
Nakupenda is about the sandbank itself: white sand, shallow water, lunch on the sand, close to Stone Town, easy for anyone. Mnemba is about what is under the water. If you are not confident swimming or you mainly want the postcard afternoon, take Nakupenda.
Prison Island or Jozani?
Both are the non-beach option, and they suit different people. Prison Island is history plus giant tortoises plus a boat ride, and it slots into a Stone Town day. Jozani is forest, mangroves and the red colobus monkey, inland to the south, and it pairs with the spice farm.

Private is worth it most on the boat days, where a fixed departure fights the tide and the light, and least on Stone Town, where a group walk works perfectly well.
Which excursions combine well
Grouping by geography saves you hours of driving. These four combinations do that naturally.
- Stone Town, Prison Island and Nakupenda: history, tortoises and a sandbank, all from the same stretch of coast.
- Stone Town and a spice farm: the old town in the morning, the farm on the way back.
- Jozani and a spice farm: the two inland stops, both south of town.
- A beach day finished with a sunset dhow cruise: nothing in the day, everything in the last two hours.

What is usually included
Inclusions vary by tour, and the honest answer is that you should never have to guess. Depending on the day, a tour can include:

How many should you actually book?
Fewer than you are about to. The most common mistake we see is a week with six excursions in it, which turns a holiday into a schedule and puts you in a minibus for half of it.

Full days like Safari Blue count as a whole day and should have the evening after them left alone. Half days pair up if they are in the same part of the island, which is what the combined tours above are for.

Are private tours worth the extra cost?
On boat days, usually yes, because you control the departure time and the pace. On town and farm tours the difference matters less.
Can I visit Prison Island and Nakupenda on the same day?
Yes, they leave from the same water in front of Stone Town and are commonly combined, often with a Stone Town walk as well.
What is included in a Zanzibar excursion?

What happens if the sea is rough?
We move the day. Boat trips depend on the weather and the tide, and a trip that should not run does not run.
