Zanzibar does the two things a honeymoon needs at once. It is beautiful enough to be the point of the trip, and small enough that seeing it does not eat the week.
This plan puts the money where privacy actually changes the day, which is the boats and the evenings, and leaves three days with nothing in them at all. That is deliberate. A honeymoon with six early starts is a tour, not a honeymoon.

Day by day
Day 1
Arrive, and go no further
Transfer, check in, swim, eat. Book nothing on the day you land. Tell your hotel it is your honeymoon when you book rather than when you arrive, because most of them do something about it and almost none of them can do it at short notice.

Day 2
Stone Town, then the sunset
Go into the old town in the late afternoon, when the heat drops and the lanes fill up again. Carved doors, the fort, the seafront, and Forodhani gardens turning into a street-food market as the light goes. Then out on a dhow for the sunset. This is the evening people remember, and it is the one where a private boat is worth every dollar.

Day 3
Mnemba atoll
The clearest water of the week, off the north-east coast. Snorkelling over the reefs, a sandbank stop, turtles if you are lucky. Mnemba Island itself is private and you do not land on it, so what you are buying is the water around it, which is the good part anyway.

Day 4
Nothing
No pick-up, no alarm. This is the day the trip stops feeling like an itinerary. Swim, read, eat lunch late, book a massage for the afternoon and dinner somewhere on the sand. If you only take one thing from this plan, take this day.

Day 5
Forest and spice
A change of scene after two days of salt water. Jozani in the morning for the red colobus monkeys and the mangrove boardwalk, then a spice farm, which is the most sensory couple of hours on the island and the one tour nobody expects to enjoy as much as they do.

Day 6
A sandbank, on your own boat
White sand in the middle of turquoise water, with lunch brought out to you. Go private and go early or late, and you get the sandbank close to empty instead of sharing it with four group boats. Size and shape depend entirely on the tide, which is why we pick the hour rather than the day.

Last morning
Leave it loose. A swim, a walk, whatever shopping did not happen, and the transfer to the airport with time to spare. If your flight is late, a second sunset cruise is a better finish than an afternoon in the lobby.

How to adapt it
If you only have five days
Keep days 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6. That is the sunset, the reefs, the sandbank and one day of nothing, which is the honeymoon in its shortest honest form.
If you would rather have one big day on the water
Swap Mnemba and the sandbank for a single Safari Blue day, which sails a dhow through the Menai Bay lagoon and finishes with a long seafood lunch on the beach. One full day instead of two half ones, and an extra empty day in the week.
If you want a whole boat for the week
A private yacht charter can cover the sandbank, the snorkelling and the sunset on your own schedule. It costs more than the group days and it is the version couples come back and tell us they are glad they took.
If you are adding a mainland safari
Do the parks first and finish on the island. Coming off a week of early game drives into a beach is the right order, and doing it the other way round rarely feels like it. Send us your dates and we will join the two halves.
Practical notes
- Say it is your honeymoon at the point of booking, to us and to your hotel. Rooms, dinners and small gestures depend on notice, not on charm at check-in.
- Spend the private-tour money on the sunset cruise and the sandbank. Those are the two where being alone changes the experience. Stone Town and the spice farm are perfectly good in a group.
- Sunset moves through the year, so the dhow departure moves with it. We confirm the time the day before.
- The tide decides the sandbank. Its size and shape change through the day and it disappears entirely at high water, which is normal and worth knowing before you compare it to a photograph.
- If you want photographs, early morning and the hour before sunset are the only two that flatter anyone. Midday on white sand is unkind to everybody.
- Dress modestly in town and in villages. Shoulders and knees covered away from the beach and the resorts.
When to come
The drier stretches, roughly June to October and December to February, give the most reliable sunsets and the calmest boat days. April and May are the wettest and the quietest, which some couples prefer and which does mean more chance of a day being moved.
Ramadan shifts through the calendar each year and changes the rhythm in Stone Town, with many local restaurants closed during daylight. Hotels and tours run normally, but it is worth knowing before you plan your evenings around the old town.

Is Zanzibar good for a honeymoon?
Yes, and particularly for couples who want more than a resort. You get beaches, reefs, a thousand-year-old town and a forest within an hour or two of each other, so the week has variety without any long travel days.
How many days should a Zanzibar honeymoon be?
Seven is the sweet spot. Five works if you keep it to the sunset, the reefs and a sandbank. Ten or more if you want to add a mainland safari to the front of the trip.
What is the most romantic thing to do in Zanzibar?
A private dhow at sunset, by some distance. A sandbank on your own boat is the other one. Both are better as private trips, and both depend on the time of day rather than the day itself.
Should we book private tours for our honeymoon?
On the sunset cruise and the sandbank, yes. Those are the two where a shared boat genuinely changes what the day feels like. On Stone Town, the spice farm and Jozani, a group tour costs less and loses nothing.
Can you arrange a private dinner on the beach?
Most hotels arrange these directly and do them well, so ask yours first. Tell us if you would rather we organised something around one of your tour days and we will see what we can put together.
Should we stay in one hotel or move around?
One hotel is the easier honeymoon and the one we would suggest. If you want both sides of the island, two or three nights near Stone Town and the rest on the coast works well, and we can run the transfer between them.
