Signature experiences

Big Game Fishing

Head into deep water after the big ones: tuna, marlin and sailfish.

Full day (charter)

The waters off Zanzibar hold serious game fish, and this is a proper deep-sea day out after tuna, marlin, sailfish and more. You head offshore on a rigged boat with an experienced crew and all the tackle.

It is a private charter for the whole boat, so gather your group. We arrange the charter, crew and timing around the season and conditions.

Highlights

  • Deep-sea fishing for big game species
  • Rigged boat and experienced crew
  • All tackle provided
  • Private charter for your group

How the day runs

Times are a guide. Tides, sea conditions and how far your hotel is from the departure point all move them, and we confirm your pick-up the day before.

  1. 06:00

    Pick-up in the dark

    • Early start, because the first hours after dawn are the best of the day.
    • Pick-up time depends on where you are staying and which departure point suits the conditions.
  2. 07:00

    Board and head out

    • Meet the captain and crew, safety briefing, then out through the channel while the crew rig the lines.
  3. 08:00

    Trolling the offshore grounds

    • Lines out for tuna, wahoo, dorado and kingfish, with the captain working the water and the current.
    • The crew switch technique through the day, and will move grounds if nothing is showing.
  4. 12:00

    Lunch on board

    • Eaten underway. The lines stay out.
  5. 14:00

    Last session

    • A final run at the grounds the captain rates for the state of the tide.
  6. 15:00

    Back in

    • Return to the departure point and your transfer back to the hotel.
    • A half-day charter runs roughly four to five hours and follows the same shape.

Questions we get asked

What will we catch?
Yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dorado, kingfish, barracuda and giant trevally are all realistic. Sailfish and marlin are seasonal and far less common. Nobody can promise a fish, and a crew that does is selling you something.
Do I need any experience?
No. The crew rig everything, put the rod in your hands when a fish is on and talk you through the fight. Experienced anglers can ask for specific techniques and grounds instead.
Half day or full day?
A half day suits a first try or a mixed group where not everyone is fishing. If fishing is the reason you came, take the full day: it buys the distance to reach better grounds and time to work them.
Can we keep the fish?
Usually some of it, and many hotels will cook your catch for you. It depends on the species and size, and billfish are released. The captain will tell you on the day.
Can children come?
On a private charter yes, with the usual caution. Offshore water is rougher than the reef, and a full day is long for young children. Tell us their ages when you book.
What if the sea is bad?
The captain calls it, and safety wins over the schedule. We move you to another day or another tour, and you are not charged for a charter that did not run.
