Mnemba is the trip people arrive already wanting, and it is also the one most often described wrongly online. Two things are worth knowing before you book: you do not set foot on Mnemba Island, and nobody can promise you dolphins.
Neither takes anything away from the day. The water around the atoll is the clearest you will see in Zanzibar, and that is what you are going for.
What Mnemba actually is
Mnemba is a small island off Zanzibar's north-east coast, ringed by a much larger reef. The island is private, leased to a single lodge, and day visitors do not land on it. The reef around it is what excursions go for.
So when a tour is sold as a trip to Mnemba Island, what it really is, and what ours is, is a boat trip into the water around the atoll. If a listing implies you will be walking around on the island, that is the point to ask a direct question.
The snorkelling
This is the reason to go. The reefs hold big numbers of tropical fish, the coral is in better shape than most of the accessible reef around the island, and on a good day the visibility is excellent. Green turtles pass through and are seen often enough to be worth hoping for, without being something anyone should promise.

Is it suitable for beginners?
Usually yes, but the conditions on the day matter more than your experience. Tell your guide before you get in the water if you are not a confident swimmer, if it is your first time in a mask, or if you would rather stay close to the boat. A good guide will change where you enter the water rather than talk you into it.
- Life jackets are on board, and there is no shame at all in wearing one to snorkel.
- Ask for a mask that fits before you leave the jetty. A leaking mask ruins the day.
- Float above the reef. Standing on coral kills it, and it cuts you.
- Nobody should be pushed in. If you do not want to get in, the boat and the sandbank are still a good morning.
The dolphins
Pods move through this water and many trips see them. Many do not. They are wild animals following fish, not a scheduled act, and any operator who guarantees a sighting is telling you something they cannot know.
How the boat behaves around them matters more than whether you see them. Chasing a pod at speed, surrounding it with boats and dropping swimmers on top of it is common on this coast, and it is why the animals leave. We keep our distance, cut the engine and let them carry on.
The sandbank
Most Mnemba mornings include a stop on a sandbank, which is bright white sand surrounded by shallow turquoise water, and the image most people have in their heads before they arrive.
It is made by the tide, so it appears, changes shape and disappears through the day. It will not look like the photograph you saw, because that photograph was taken at a particular hour on a particular tide. This is also why we choose the departure time rather than running the same slot every day.
How the day runs
Roughly, and with the caveat that the tide moves all of it. Trips leave early because the water is calmest and clearest in the morning.

- 2Boat out from the north-east coast, with a safety briefing before you leave.
- 3Snorkelling on the reef, one or two stops depending on conditions.
- 4A sandbank stop if the tide allows, with fresh fruit.
- 5Back to shore by early afternoon, and to your hotel from there.
If dolphins turn up, they usually do so on the way out, and the boat stops. That is the only part of the day nobody can schedule.
Where trips leave from
Boats go from the north-east and northern coast, mainly around Matemwe, which is the closest point, and from Nungwi and Kendwa. If you are staying in Stone Town or on the south-east coast you can still go, but add an hour or more of driving each way, and expect a genuinely early start.
It is one reason we ask where you are staying before quoting a time. The same tour is a different day from Matemwe than it is from Paje.
When to go
The drier stretches, roughly June to October and December to February, give the most reliable sea days. But a calm week in April can beat a windy week in July, and the thing that actually decides your morning is the wind, the swell and the tide on the day.

Mnemba or Safari Blue?
The question we get most, and they are not versions of each other. Mnemba is a half day from the north-east and the underwater part is the point. Safari Blue is a full day from the south-west: dhow sailing, a lagoon, a sandbank, snorkelling and a long seafood lunch. If you have a week, do both, because nothing about them repeats.

What to bring
- Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. There is no shade on a boat or a sandbank.
- A rash vest, which beats reapplying sunscreen on your back all morning.
- A towel and something dry to change into.
- A waterproof pouch or dry bag for your phone.
- Your own mask if you have one you like. We carry them, but a familiar fit is better.
- Cash for anything you want ashore afterwards.
Is it worth it?
For anyone who wants to be in the water, yes, comfortably. For anyone who mainly wants a beautiful beach day with a short boat ride, Nakupenda is closer, easier and cheaper.

Can you visit Mnemba Island?
Not on a standard excursion. The island is private and leased to a lodge, and day trips go into the water around the atoll rather than landing on it. Be careful of any tour sold as access to the island itself.
Are dolphins guaranteed at Mnemba?
No. Dolphins are wild and move with the fish. Many trips see them and some do not, and no honest operator will promise a sighting.
Can you swim with dolphins at Mnemba?
We do not sell it as a product, because selling it is what leads to boats chasing pods. If a pod is settled and conditions allow, being in the water nearby can happen naturally.
Is Mnemba good for beginner snorkellers?
Usually yes, with a life jacket and a guide alongside you, but sea conditions on the day matter more than experience. Tell your guide before you get in if you are not a confident swimmer.
How long is a Mnemba trip?
Most are a half day, leaving early and back by early afternoon. It runs longer if you are staying further south, because of the drive to the north-east coast.

Can children go to Mnemba?
Confident swimmers get a lot out of it. For younger children or anyone unsure in deep water, a sandbank day is the easier choice, and a private boat lets you come back when they have had enough.
What happens if the sea is rough?
We move the day. Boat trips depend on wind, swell and tide, and a trip that should not run does not run.
