Combining a Tanzania safari with Zanzibar

17 August 20267 min read

Most people who fly this far want both: the game parks on the mainland and the ocean on the island. They are part of the same country and a short flight apart, which is why the combination is so common.

This is a planning guide rather than a price list. It covers how many days each half needs, which parks earn their place on a first trip, and the mistakes that make the two halves fight each other.

Do the safari first

Safari days start before dawn and involve a lot of driving. They are wonderful and they are tiring. Finishing on the coast means the last four or five days of your holiday are the slow ones, and you fly home rested.

The other way round, you spend your beach week bracing for 5am starts and go home worn out. We have never met anyone who regretted the safari-then-beach order.

How many days each side

Total tripSafariZanzibarWhat it gives you
7 days3 nights3 nightsTight but workable, two parks and a beach
10 days4 nights5 nightsThe comfortable version for a first trip
12 to 14 days5 to 6 nights6 to 7 nightsSerengeti properly, and a real rest after

Below three nights on safari, the driving starts to outweigh the game viewing. Below three on the island, you arrive, unpack and leave.

Which parks

Serengeti

The one people picture: open plains, big predators, and the wildebeest migration moving through on its annual circuit. It is large, so where you stay inside it matters more than in a small park, and that depends on the time of year.

Ngorongoro Crater

A collapsed volcanic caldera with a resident population of game on the floor, including some of the easiest lion and rhino sightings in Tanzania. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. One full day inside the crater is usually enough, and it delivers more per hour than anywhere else on the circuit.

Tarangire

Elephants and baobabs, and far fewer vehicles than the other two. It sits closest to Arusha, so it is the natural first stop, and it is the park most often dropped from short itineraries. Worth keeping if you have the night to spare.

For a first trip, Ngorongoro and Serengeti are the core, with Tarangire added when the trip runs to four nights or more. Adding a fourth park to a short trip buys you more driving, not more animals.

When to go

SeasonOn safariOn the island
January to FebruaryCalving season on the southern Serengeti plains, and predators with itHot, generally good sea conditions
March to MayLong rains, green landscapes, fewer vehicles, some roads difficultThe wettest stretch, and many hotels close in April and May
June to OctoberThe dry months. Game concentrates around water and is easiest to findThe most reliable weather of the year
November to DecemberShort rains, green again, quieter than the high seasonWarm, with showers that usually pass

June to October suits both halves, which is why it is the busy season and why lodges book out early. If a particular stage of the migration is the point of the trip, plan around that first and fit the island around it. More on the island half in our guide to the seasons.

How the two halves connect

Scheduled light aircraft link the northern-circuit airstrips and Arusha with Zanzibar, usually with a stop or two on the way. It turns what would be a long drive back to Arusha followed by a separate flight into a single morning.

How we plan both halves

We plan the whole trip. On the mainland we arrange private Tanzania safaris across the northern and southern circuits, quoted to your dates, group and comfort level. On the island we run the transfers, the ocean days, Stone Town, the spice farms and the forest.

Two of our packages already join the two halves, both over ten days: the Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Beach Holiday and the Honeymoon Safari & Zanzibar Beach Escape. If neither fits, ask us for a quote and we build the mix around your dates.

Tell us your dates and which parks you are looking at, and we will tell you honestly what fits.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need for a safari and Zanzibar?

Ten is the comfortable minimum for a first trip: four nights on safari and five on the island, plus the day it takes to move between them. Seven can be done, but nothing in it is relaxed.

Should I do the safari or Zanzibar first?

Safari first, every time. Game drives start before dawn and the days are long. Finishing on the coast means you go home rested rather than exhausted.

How do you get from the Serengeti to Zanzibar?

By scheduled light aircraft from the park airstrips or from Arusha, usually with a stop on the way. Book it with the safari so the connection matches your last camp departure.

Which is better, Serengeti or Ngorongoro?

They do different jobs. Ngorongoro concentrates a great deal of game into one day inside the crater. Serengeti is vast, wilder, and where the migration happens. On a first trip, do both.

When is the best time for both?

June to October works for the parks and the island at once, which is also why it is the busiest and most expensive stretch of the year. January and February are a strong alternative if the calving season interests you.

Can you book the safari for us?

Not yet under our own name. We run the Zanzibar half and we will plan it around your safari dates, and we are happy to point you at operators on the mainland we would use ourselves.
